Increasingly we are hearing that you would like information about helping children to understand their family situation – including how to talk to them about growing up in kinship care and advice on helping them talk about it with others.
We know that becoming a kinship carer rarely happens without a range of emotions coming into play – concern for the child’s wellbeing, your own feelings about how they have come into your care, and most of all a fierce, protective love for the child.
With this in mind, it’s understandable that many kinship carers find it hard to know where to start when trying to explain to children what has happened, what it means for them, their understanding of family and their future.
We’d like to do more to support kinship carers to navigate these muddy waters. We’re doing research into the best approaches out there, but we want to hear from you too. You are the experts. Tell us about what has worked, and where you’re still a bit stuck, and we’ll aim to create a new section on our website that brings together everything we hear.
Thank you for taking the time to help us with this.
