Our kinship carer workshops
Our workshops are only for kinship carers.
Whether you have a legal order, such as a special guardianship order, or your arrangement is private within your family, these workshops are for you.
You’ll be in a safe space with other kinship carers just like you.
Unfortunately we can’t have children at the workshop – we want to give kinship carers space to learn and focus on themselves.
If you’re not a kinship carer, please do not book.
What the workshop covers
Drug and alcohol misuse can affect your family’s relationships and wellbeing. So we’ve worked with England’s leading families and addiction charity, Adfam, to design this workshop to support you in your time of need. It covers:
- the direct and indirect impact of drug and alcohol misuse on families
- identifying safeguarding risks and how to keep your family safe
- what to do when you think drug or alcohol misuse is affecting your kinship child during contact sessions
- understanding your kinship child’s experience of drug or alcohol misuse by a parent
After the workshop, we’ll email you a copy of the presentation slides and some links to helpful resources.
Book a space by completing our booking form.
What to expect at the workshop
Our in-person workshops give you a chance to learn about this topic, as well as meet and talk to other kinship carers.
Structure of the workshop
Our in-person workshops last 3 hours, including time for lunch.
After getting settled at a table with a drink, our trainers will start the workshop. We split the time into 2 halves, with a short comfort break in the middle.
You can ask questions throughout the session, or leave them to ask our trainer at the end. But make sure you stay for your free lunch, included with your booking. Lunch is also a good opportunity to chat to other local kinship carers.
We’re there to support you
If you’re worried about meeting new people for the first time, or feeling nervous, we’ll be there to support you.
Our friendly trainers are there to welcome you, help you feel comfortable and answer any questions you have throughout.
Taking part in the workshop
We want you to be comfortable on the day. If you’re worried about sharing your story, we won’t ask you to. It’s up to you how much you share and we’ll respect your choices. You’ll find that some people like to share, and others prefer to listen and learn from others’ experiences.
There are also a couple of activities for you to take part in. These might be group discussions on your table, or filling in activity sheets that you can take back and use with the child you care for. Again, you can decide what level of involvement you’re comfortable with.
If you do feel comfortable getting involved, you’ll get a chance to:
- ask questions
- chat to other kinship carers
- talk to our trainers after the workshop
If you feel ready to book, fill out our booking form.
