Our kinship carer roadshows
Our roadshows are only for kinship carers.
Whether you have a legal order, such as a special guardianship order, or your arrangement is private within your family, these roadshows are for you.
You are a kinship carer if you’re a family member or friend who’s stepped up to care for a child when their parents aren’t able to.
Run by our own kinship training team, we’ve created the roadshows to:
- give training in specific areas of kinship care
- help local kinship carers connect with others who share similar challenges and experiences
- help you understand the support available to you locally
You’ll be in a safe space with other kinship carers just like you. Unfortunately we can’t have children at the roadshow – we want to give kinship carers space to learn and focus on themselves.
Information stalls on the day
You’ll also find information stalls at our roadshows. You can choose to go and chat to the people at these stalls throughout the day. They don’t play a bigger part in the day and aren’t around during the workshop sessions
BookTrust
The BookTrust stall has free books for you take away, as well as resources to support reading and sharing stories together.
What the roadshows cover
- Introduction to making decisions as a kinship carer, including how parental responsibility and your kinship care arrangement affect your rights
- An overview of school systems for children in kinship care
- An introduction to understanding trauma and attachment
- Tips for self-care and support
After the roadshow, we’ll email you a copy of the presentation slides and some links to helpful resources.
What to expect at the roadshow
Our roadshows are a chance to meet and talk to other local kinship carers. We have kinship carers come from all over the area. Some are new to kinship care, some have been kinship carers for many years. Some have never met other kinship carers before. Whatever your situation, you’ll be among people just like you.
We’re there to support you
If you’re feeling nervous, or worried about meeting new people for the first time, we’ll be there to support you.
Our friendly trainers are there to welcome you, help you feel comfortable and answer any questions you have throughout.
Taking part in the roadshow workshops
We want you to be comfortable on the day. If you’re worried about sharing your story, we won’t ask you to. It’s up to you how much you share with us and other kinship carers and we’ll respect your choices. You’ll find that some people like to share, and others prefer to listen and learn from others’ experiences.
There are also a couple of activities for you to take part in. These might be group discussions on your table, or filling in activity sheets that you can take back and use with the child you care for. Again, you can decide what level of involvement you’re comfortable with.
If you do feel comfortable getting involved, you’ll get a chance to:
- ask questions
- chat to other kinship carers
- talk to our trainers throughout the day
Safe spaces for you
We know that some discussion topics can be particularly hard to talk about for different kinship carers at different stages of their journey. If there’s a topic that you are finding difficult, we want you to feel safe to leave the room. Someone from the Kinship team will show you to a quiet room and offer you a comforting ear or some space and peace.
Structure of the roadshow
Our roadshows last 5 hours from 9.30am to 2.30pm.
There’s a delicious lunch for you to enjoy in the middle of the day and a comfort break to help break up our different workshops. You can stretch your legs, visit the information stalls, or chat to other kinship carers and our Kinship team.
Our team stay until 3pm to chat about any questions you still have.
