About the event

This workshop is for kinship carers.

Kinship carers are family or friends who step up, often during an unexpected crisis, to care for a child when their parents aren’t able to.

Our Breaking Point research found nearly 1 in 5 kinship carers feel lonely “often or always”. If you’re feeling this way, you’re not alone. In this interactive workshop, you’ll meet other kinship carers like you and learn:

  • practical strategies to cope with difficult emotions
  • how to recognise when you need a break and find time to look after yourself
  • where to get further emotional support

You are invited to stay after the workshop to have a free lunch and connect with the other kinship carers. Please make a note of any dietary requirements in the booking form below.

After the workshop you will receive information and the presentation slides by email, along with a feedback survey.

About the venue

Our Kinship workshop takes place in the Ballroom at Exeter Community Centre, 17 St David’s Hill, Exeter, EX4 3RG.

The Ballroom is located on first floor, accessible via lift.

There is no onsite parking at the venue, except for 3 blue badge spaces which must be booked in advance.

There are several public car parks nearby. Mary Arches Street Car Park (EX4 3AZ) and Northernhay Street Car Park (EX4 3ER) are both a 5-minute walk from the venue. Prices start at £6 for 4 hours.

The closest station is Exeter Central, which is a 7-minute walk from the venue.

Exeter St Davids station is an 11-minute walk from the venue. This journey requires walking uphill and may be more difficult for those with mobility needs.

Accessibility

The venue is fully accessible with step-free access. If you have any additional accessibility needs, you will be asked about this on our booking form. Please let us know so we can make this event as comfortable as possible for you.

Who will be there?

Our events are a warm, supportive space to learn about this topic, as well as meet and connect with other kinship carers.

Unfortunately, we ask that children do not attend this event. Local authorities will not be in attendance.

What happens if you need to cancel your place?

This workshop is run by our Kinship team, which includes kinship carers.

About Izzy

Izzy has over 12 years of experience in the education sector, supporting young people, particularly international students to access higher education. She is passionate about working with people from diverse backgrounds, building relationships, and helping others achieve positive outcomes. Izzy is also an auntie and kinship carer to her young niece, giving her lived experience of navigating court proceedings, stepping into a caring role, and more recently, the “terrible twos.” She understands both the challenges and rewards of kinship care and is passionate about supporting others through shared experience. Outside of work, Izzy enjoys travelling, music festivals (especially celebrating her birthday at Glastonbury), watching Arsenal play, making the most of the Cornish coast, and any excuse for fancy dress with friends.
