Who is this masterclass for?
This one-off masterclass is for any kinship carer living in England who wants to create a safe and nurturing environment for the child/ren they care for.
What will be covered?
In this masterclass, you will learn:
- what latest research tells us is important to children in kinship care
- what children in kinship care have said they value in family life
- how actively listening to the children in your care can improve their wellbeing, development and sense of belonging
- how to adopt a “what matters” approach and how this can help create a safe and trusting environment
How to join the masterclass
This masterclass will be held online using a free platform called Zoom.
You can access Zoom through a desktop computer, laptop, tablet or even your phone. You may need to download Zoom before you join – please factor in time to do that. The best experience will be through a computer or laptop. Watch a video on how to join a Zoom meeting.
To join the workshop, click on the Zoom link in the email we sent you.
Please make sure you:
- join on time – late joiners might not be admitted after 15 minutes
- have a pen/pencil and paper to make notes
What happens if you need to cancel your place?

Who’s running this masterclass?
This masterclass will be run and facilitated by Dr Paul Shuttleworth.
About Dr Paul Shuttleworth
Paul is a registered social worker, having worked in children and families practice for over 20 years and in a kinship care team in Brighton and Hove. Having completed his PhD in 2021 on What Matters to Children Living in Kinship Care, Paul worked as a BASW Professional Officer, Postdoctoral Fellow, Lecturer and Research Associate at the University of Sussex, and a Senior Lecturer at Kingston University. He is co-host of the Do Do Social Work podcast, runs workshops on life story work for Kinship, and has contributed to a number of journals and edited books.
His book Navigating Relational Spaces is out in September 2025.
