Who is this workshop for?
This workshop is open to all kinship carers living in England who want to learn more about online safety for children in their care – including how to help them navigate the internet, what typical use looks like, as well as addressing safeguarding concerns and basic terms/concepts – even when carers feel less computer comfortable themselves.
What will be covered?
In this workshop, you’ll learn how to:
- better understand children and young people’s online experiences, and what different age groups might access
- describe the 4Cs of online risk, identifying a range of potential online harms and possible warning signs
- apply practical strategies to conversations with children about their online lives
- develop confidence supporting children online – even if you’re less computer comfortable (signposting to parental controls, screentime settings), by discussing key concerns with an online safety expert
- recognise when a child needs help – where to go for reporting routes, advice and support (including in urgent situations)
After the workshop, you’ll receive information and the presentation slides by email, along with a feedback survey.
How to join the workshop
All workshops will be held online using a free platform called Zoom. Please note that numbers are limited for each session to around 20-25 people to allow you to meet other kinship carers.
You can access Zoom through a desktop computer, laptop, tablet or even your phone.
You may need to download Zoom before you join – please factor in time to do that. The best experience will be through a computer or laptop. Watch a video on how to join a Zoom meeting.

Please make sure you:
- join on time – late joiners might not be admitted after 15 minutes
- have a pen/pencil and paper to make notes
What happens if you need to cancel your place?
We understand that life gets in the way sometimes, so if you need to cancel your place please do try and let us know as soon as possible.

Who runs this workshop?
The workshop is run by Childnet.
Childnet work directly with 20,000 children and young people a year, giving them the information and skills they need to stay safe online. They also provide resources and advice for parents, carers, teachers and other professionals working with children. As part of their work with the UK Safer Internet Centre, they co-ordinate the UK’s largest annual online safety celebration, Safer Internet Day. Whether shaping policy responses, working with government or the technology industry, Childnet centre youth voices when helping make the internet a safer place.
About Phoebe Moriarty Roberts (she/her)
Phoebe is an Assistant Education Manager at Childnet International, a charity working to make the internet a great and safe place for children and young people. Phoebe came to Childnet from a background in youth work and has been working in education and online safety for 10 years.
Phoebe and the Education Team at Childnet work directly with 20,000 children a year and produce the educational materials for the national Safer Internet Day campaign, alongside a range of other resources supporting parents, carers, educators and young people with special educational needs and disabilities.
