Kinship: Statement on disorder and racism
6 August 2024
Kinship works with kinship families across England and Wales, including with families who are part of the local community affected by the terrible events in Southport last week.
The horrifying riots and disorder that we have seen since have had a huge impact on communities across the country, including a number of communities where we work directly with kinship carers.
This violence is rooted in hatred, racism and Islamaphobia and seeks to create division and cause fear and intimidation. It has no place in our society.
We understand how upsetting and distressing it must be for people affected, particularly those who already have experienced racism, Islamaphobia or bigotry and those who live in the areas that have experienced violence and disorder.
We’re actively engaging with kinship carer volunteers in the affected areas to check in on their wellbeing, and that of the kinship carers in their support groups.
Kinship stands in solidarity with the communities affected by these appalling acts of hate.
