Kinship featured in Evening Standard’s Winter Survival Appeal

Kinship is incredibly proud to have been selected to be a part of the Evening Standard and Comic Relief’s new Winter Survival Appeal.

The campaign aims to help children and families who are struggling with the cost of living across London and the UK, with particular recognition of how tough it will be for many families this winter.

Day two of the Appeal has featured Kinship in the Evening Standard, with a compelling article that shines a light on the ‘unsung heroes’ who step in to raise the children of family and friends and the extreme financial challenges many of them are facing.

Maggie*, a kinship carer from North London who was interviewed by the Evening Standard, said: “At my age I should not be getting stressed over water bills but the cost has doubled. I don’t understand how that is but it’s keeping me up at night….I do it to keep the grandchildren together because, without me, they’d be split up and in care all over the place.”

As part of the Appeal, Kinship will receive a £50,000 grant towards our advice service which is a fantastic endorsement of the lifeline it is and the positive difference it makes to kinship families across the country. The article also highlights more of our vital work to support kinship carers in London and across England and Wales including one-to-one intensive support and our kinship carer support groups.

As kinship carer Carrie* says: “With my Kinship group, there are 10 of us, we’re all in the same boat and just speaking with them makes me feel lighter.”
