About the event

This workshop is open to all kinship carers who want to learn more about online safety for children in their care – including how to help them navigate the internet, what typical use looks like, as well as addressing safeguarding concerns.

Kinship carers are family or friends who step up, often during an unexpected crisis, to care for a child when their parents aren’t able to.

In this workshop, you’ll learn how to:

  • better understand children and young people’s online experiences, and what different age groups might access
  • describe the 4Cs of online risk, identifying a range of potential online harms and possible warning signs
  • apply practical strategies to conversations with children about their online lives
  • develop confidence supporting children online – even if you’re less computer comfortable (signposting to parental controls, screentime settings), by discussing key concerns with an online safety expert
  • recognise when a child needs help – where to go for reporting routes, advice and support (including in urgent situations)

You are invited to stay after the workshop to have a free lunch and connect with the other kinship carers. Please make a note of any dietary requirements in the booking form below.

After the workshop, you’ll receive information and the presentation slides by email, along with a feedback survey.

About the venue

Our Kinship workshop takes places at Statement Suite, Aspire Leeds, 2 Infirmary Street, Leeds, LS1 2JP. The venue is in a central location and easily accessible by public transport. For details on how to get to the venue, visit the Aspire Leeds website.

 

Any of the following buses stop on Infirmary Street which is right outside the Aspire main entrance: 35, 45, 71,1, 95, 96, x98, 99, 444, 74, 85, 770.

The nearest train station is Leeds Station, which is a 4-minute walk from the venue.

There is limited car parking available for visitors at Aspire. Parking spaces can be pre-booked by calling their office reception on: 01132 368 368, at a rate of £3 per hour. Visitors need to obtain a permit from reception to display in your car.

Accessibility

The venue is wheelchair accessible with step-free access. If you have any additional accessibility needs, you will be asked about this in our booking form. Please let us know so we can make this event as comfortable as possible for you.

Who will be there?

Our events are a warm, supportive space to learn about this topic, as well as meet and connect with other kinship carers.

This event is open to up to 25 kinship carers. Unfortunately, we ask that children do not attend this event. Local authorities will not be in attendance.

The workshop is run by Childnet.

About Childnet

Childnet work directly with 20,000 children and young people a year, giving them the information and skills they need to stay safe online. They also provide resources and advice for parents, carers, teachers and other professionals working with children. As part of their work with the UK Safer Internet Centre, they co-ordinate the UK’s largest annual online safety celebration, Safer Internet Day. Whether shaping policy responses, working with government or the technology industry, Childnet centre youth voices when helping make the internet a safer place.

Rosie has a teaching background and has worked in education and online safety for 7 years. She is currently an Education Officer at Childnet.
